dimly lit... : Vulnerabilities...

Community is the place where we gather to embrace vulnerabilities and discover strengths (Henri Nouwen). Community can endure a lot, as long as people are honest. We can endure hardships, hurts, and even abuse... when we are honest.

First, to embrace vulnerabilities. Vulnerability is more than knowing our weaknesses, it's owning them and exposing them to others. Our tendency is to deceive all others and hide vulnerabilities because we fear they will be exploited. But, only when we display that we too have vulnerabilities will others be free to expose their own - developing unrivaled mutuality. Some people I know who appear to be the strongest, bravest, most resilient individuals are the ones I most easily picture crying in their pillow at night. They are so darn lonely. We know their hardness is merely porcelain, ready to fall into pieces at the most inconvenient of moments - and hopefully a vulnerable someone will be there for them when it happens.

Discovering strengths. Here we practice dishonesty by deceiving ourselves into thinking we have them all. We will say we don't have them all, but deep inside we have convinced ourselves that we ought to and it justifies our individualistic behaviors and stubbornness. Let's face it, each of us is only truly great at just a handful of things. We need help, and we need to help others. People are dying to know what your genuine strengths are and when you offer them humbly you create community bonds that are mutually beneficial.

So, if you want to create community, start by being honest. Discover your strengths and become transparent with your vulnerabilities. Besides, you'll learn much faster who is worth being in community with and maybe save yourself an awful lot of grief pursuing a life you just don't fit into.

Great thoughts. Interesting, though...some of the strongest, bravest, most resilient individuals I know DO cry into their pillow at night, because they are willing to be vulnerable with their spouse, their phone friend or their Maker - they are brave enough to let themselves feel and allow themselves to be comforted. Feeling is scary...you can't control feelings and admitting them can leave you feeling stark naked...vulnerable. I like this post. Love you!
