Richard Foster was once challenged by Dallas Willard, "You need to decide if you are the minister of the people or a minister of Christ." On the surface this statement seems only relevant to a career minister, but in it's fullness this is a decision we must all make - whether we are disciples of Jesus or subject to the expectations of others. When we love Jesus our service and love for others comes as a natural consequence. We become free to enjoy God and each other and there is no room for control or manipulation.
Contrary to the teachings of bad religion, Foster reminds us that the faithful life is not about gritting our teeth and getting more serious. Instead, it's about learning to truly love God, Jesus, and the people around us.
